What
are we doing?
We want to produce a documentary-style profile video for each of 5 x selected Makers Alumni. The video will be entirely narrated by their voice-over and illustrated by their current lived experience...something they've been able to achieve by being part of the Makers programme.
What
is it going to look and feel like?
There are two key references we like the look and feel of.
The first is from Harvard:
The first is from Harvard:
The second is The Royal Navy's "Made in the Royal Navy" campaign...or at least it's sentiment around being 'made' by a process...in this case, working with Makers.
We like the idea - whether we use this in real-terms or not - of the idea of being 'Made by Makers'. Not only is the content we're creating literally made by Makers, but so are the individuals we're featuring themselves; their careers, theirs skillsets, their mindsets, their attitudes the the future and the inevitable changes and challenges it brings.
We want to create a series of videos that feel like the Royal Navy campaign in terms of a narrative that shows growth, progression and change...but look like the Harvard campaign in terms of the observational documentary style of following our individual contributors.

What
are we hearing?
We're hearing our Makers alumni explain to us...
- Who they are, what they do and where they do it.
- Where they were before Makers...what they were doing, where their career was heading and how they felt about it.
- How they felt when they found Makers, what their hopes were at the beginning of the process and what they wanted to get out of it.
- What the Makers experience was like...what it gave them...how it worked for them...
- What the outcome was...what skills they left with...what attitude they left with...
- How they secured their current role and what skills they needed, that they now had.
- How much they credit the Makers experience with shaping their future, both now and beyond
What
are we seeing?
We like the idea of following our contributors over the course of a working day; on their journey to work and filming with them (permission dependant) as they do their current job.
What we want to show is a day in the life they wouldn't have without Makers.
For each of our contributors, we'll show...
What we want to show is a day in the life they wouldn't have without Makers.
For each of our contributors, we'll show...
- Morning travel, commutes, routines...similar to what we see in the Harvard video...EG
- Getting up
- Walking the dog
- Leaving the house
- Grabbing coffees or breakfast snacks
- An early morning gym-trip/run
- Hoping on the bus/tube/walking London's streets
- Arriving at work, greeting colleagues, hanging coats/bags, firing up computer
- Highlights of a working day
- End of a working day
- Travelling home or out
- Meeting friends for drinks/dinner
- The shots are very UGC in style - quality, but captured as 'grabs'...short moments that are impromptu, informal with a social-media aesthetic.
- Along those lines, we also shoot using some of the newest, non-traditional camera tech; drones, pocket gimbals, DJI action cameras to capture an authentic look-and-feel that's also low-key and less obtrusive in a street or office setting.
- The edits are quick, sometimes jarring as we show the pace of the day and the montage of moments that make it...very much in the style of your other Google Search reference
- We can also support the key messaging by using a text-overlay in a similar style to the provided Google Search reference...for example, a typed (slightly loaded!) question overlaid on screen that we then hear our contributor go on to answer.
- We may also be able to include content from the contributors themselves...any photos or video clips they took from their time at Makers.
How
are we doing it?
We would need to ask each contributor to give us a day of their time - on a real working day. We wouldn't need to film over all of it (they'd need to work!) but we can dip in and out over the course of a day to capture key scheduled moments that can be planned in advance.
In addition to this, we'd ask each contributor to attend a recording session at Makers offices, where we'd capture:
Completing the above with each contributor is a really nice way of having each of our stories converge...it's the one element that ties them all together...and will be particularly useful for the summary film where we combine all their stories.
- The working commute
- Office arrival
- Highlights of the working day
- Lunch
- Leaving work
- Evening plans
In addition to this, we'd ask each contributor to attend a recording session at Makers offices, where we'd capture:
- Their return to Makers
- Either a more formal interview that underpins the video OR
- An audio-only interview, that gives us our VO narrative
- A series of slo-motion video portraits

What
are our deliverables
By approaching the project in this way, we would aim to secure the following deliverables to give as much return on investment as possible.
- 1 x 60 to 90 second profile video for each Makers Alumni, hearing their unique story
- 1 x 90 to 120 second montage of those profile video that highlights the impact Makers has had across all of them
- 5 x podcast deliverables; 10 x minute audio interviews from each contributor where we hear their interview - and Makers experience - in full
